Her car is racing at a terrifying speed through the streets of a large city, and something gruesome, something with giant eyeballs, is chasing her, closing in fast. It was a dream, of course, and after Emily Gurule, a 50-year-old high school teacher, related it to Dr. Barry Krakow, he did not ask her to unpack its symbolism. He simply told her to think of a new one. “In your mind, with thinking...

Sleep Medicine Perspective

One of the most frequently overlooked aspects of nightmare treatment is that many chronic nightmare sufferers experience other sleep complaints beyond the disturbing dreams, and yet they often do not recognize the impact of these additional sleep conditions.

Unfortunately, their physicians and therapists also tend not recognize these sleep disorders. If you suffer from nightmares and any of these additional complaints:

  • Daytime fatigue or sleepiness
  • Difficulty falling asleep
  • Difficulty staying asleep
  • Poor sleep quality
  • Problematic breathing or snoring
  • Excessive movements while sleeping

...and you can't find a solution to these problems, chances are you have an underlying sleep disorder.

Sleep problems are often complex and can include both physical and mental factors. In my practice, I work to address both the medical and psychological aspects so that we can fit together all of the pieces of your personal sleep puzzle. Then, we can arrive at a more complete treatment plan.

It is common for me to treat a chronic nightmare sufferer who may have all of the following sleep problems:

  • Sleep Apnea
  • Depression
  • Insomnia
  • Leg Movement Disorders
  • Erratic sleep schedules
  • Nightmares....and more.

At Maimonides International Nightmare Treatment, we welcome patients with any combination of these complex sleep problems.
